in 2007, despina, nequi and wen-shuan worked with the African Womens’ Organization and the Reconstruction group of artists and social workers, to explore universal questions regarding immigration in the form of a collaborative dance theater installation at the Kipseli market in Athens, Greece.

1:1 please remove shoes is a performance installation that negotiates several levels of performance simultaneously, dance as visual, kinetic, situation-specific composition as well as dance as encounter. It requires a minimum of three performers, space for the tent and power source.

It involves a 15’x15′ tent where a 1:1 performance is in progress. One audience member is invited to enter at a time. A dance is created that the audience member is invited to participate in.

The tent has a live projection on one side and a shadow screen on the other. Outside the tent, two dancers negotiate these images in a composition based performance. The flexible score sources input from the room creating a circuit of different levels of participation that interrelate throughout the duration.
