A purpose of the work is to pose questions regarding how we negotiate boundaries on the different levels; human relationships, physical space, and cultural practices. Participants explore movement vocabulary with an emphasis on excavating and physicalizing particular psycho-geographies – personal stories and communal histories. As we are confronted with each other’s cultures, how can we successfully co-exist and flourish? What do we carry with us? What do we leave behind and how does that effect our environment?
As kinetic organisms moving about on a planet shrinking from population density and technological advances, we are colliding faster and harder; realities intersecting, borders shift. As the ground shifts, how do we make sense of where the pieces fall? How do we choose to rearrange them?

As the gateway to Europe, Greece has seen an exponential increase in refugees in the past ten years. With inadequate infrastructure and a faltering economy, the country is ill equipped for the thousands of asylum seekers flooding its borders. In addition, many refugees carry complex traumas from their home countries, and suffer from a poor standard of living in Greece, where they face racism and hostility.
mdas addresses these issues through an annual three week movement workshop for refugees, which culminates in a performance at the Athens Anti-Racist Festival. Since 2007, the workshop bridges cultural divides and promotes understanding, while providing refugees with the means to transform their experiences through healing somatic practices such as yoga, dance improvisation, and Theater of the Oppressed exercises.
Your generosity provides us with the necessary funds to work with refugees ages 4 through 50 from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, Bangladesh, Senegal and Mauritania. This summer, we will return to Greece to conduct a new workshop that will provide a safe environment and an empowering performance platform for 30-50 refugees struggling with displacement, discrimination, and past traumas.

passTRESpass 2009 is an interactive, roving, movement installation that addresses migration, home and borders. What and where is home? Where do we feel safe?
logistics
We are interested in working with approximately 15-30 participants, preferably a diverse group of immigrants and locals who can commit to a three week rehearsal process – likely 8 hrs rehearsals a week — and one or two performances.This work will be performed in and around the Kipseli Market. A video of the work will be presented at the 23rd World Congress on Dance Research in Spain in mid July 2009. The performance will probably be on the weekend. We are thinking of this as an opportunity to broaden the dialogue by inviting a different audience to see the work and an opportunity to show and hear the real human stories behind theimmigration statistics.

Proximity creates an opportunity for immigrants and Greek locals to learn about each other and to dance together for a moment at the festival. We continue through July 11th.

PASStresPASS 2013Οι ομάδες χορού ELANADISTIKANOUME με έδρα την Αθήνα και The Modern Dance Awareness Society (TMDAS) με έδρα την Νέα Υόρκη, προσκαλούν για συμμετοχή μετανάστες και ντόπιους που θα τους ενδιέφερε να λάβουν μέρος στην διαδικασία δημιουργίας παράστασης με θέμα την μετανάστευση, τα σύνορα και τα δικαιώματα.
Το κύριο μέρος του πρότζεκτ θα πραγματοποιηθεί από 20 Μαίου εώς 10 Ιουνίου, με καθημερινές συναντήσεις στην Αθήνα. Τον συντονισμό του πρότζεκτ έχουν οι Despina Sophia Stamos (TΜDAS) και Παναγιώτης Ανδρονικίδης (ELANADISTIKANOUME).
Καλούμε ομάδες μεταναστών, μαθητές και δασκάλους να πλαισιώσουν το πρότζεκτ συμμετέχοντας με τον τρόπο που μπορούν. Επίσης μουσικούς, χορευτές, ηθοποιούς, video artists και φωτογράφους που θα ήθελαν να συμμετέχουν.
Η παράσταση θα παρουσιαστεί στο Αντιρατσιστικό Φεστιβάλ και σε άλλα φεστιβάλ και εκδηλώσες στην Αθήνα και στην επαρχία.
Η προτοιμασία του πρότζεκτ έχει ήδη ξεκινήσει από την ομάδα ELANADISTIKANOUME με σταθερές συναντήσεις μια ή δύο φορές τη βδομαδα, τα Σαββατοκύριακα.

Θέλουμε να τους βοηθήσουμε, έχουμε δοκιμάσει τα φαγητά τους, έχουμε ψωνίσει απο τους πάγκους τους αλλά σπάνια έχουμε την δυνατότητα να τους συναντήσουμε και να τους γνωρίσουμε από κοντά, να τους γνωρίσουμε σαν πρόσωπα που έχουν μια ιστορία και μπορούν να τη διηγηθούν.
Η ομάδα ELANADISTIKANOUME και η χορογράφος της ομάδας The Modern Dance Awareness Society (Ν.Υ.), Despina-Sofia Stamos, σε συνεργασία με μετανάστες performers, δημιούργησαν στα πλαίσια του Αντιρατσιστικού Φεστιβάλ, τις συνθήκες ώστε να γίνει αυτή η συνάντηση.
Θα καλέσουν και τις 3 μέρες, 8.30-10.30μμ τους επισκέπτες του Φεστιβάλ, να συμμετέχουν σε ένα δρώμενο που θα βρεθούν στο ίδιο τραπέζι με ένα μετανάστη ο καθένας, να επικοινωνήσουν άμεσα μαζί του, να μοιραστούν κάποιες στιγμές και αν το επιθυμούν να χορέψουν μαζί του.

Athens, on the other hand, is going through tumultuous times. There are reports of anti-immigrant violence. One of our former participants was attacked this past year. There is , sadly, much despair about what the future holds.Even long time residents are struggling with the new laws. Our plan is to create a safe, creative environment for the participating immigrants.

Inspiring…sigh. Last week Panagioti set up another rehearsal/site workshop at Micro Kavouri Beach. We were joined by Abdul, Sedat, Vicky, Patricia and three documentarian collaborators, Tristan, Damien and Elena. The site, a popular beach near Bouliaghmeni has a small island with the ruins of a fort about 300 feet from the shore. This was the space for our investigation.
It was breathtaking to see Abdul transformed into a snake/crocodile, Sedat softening into a rock wall, Patricia exploring crab-ness as Vicky became the sea. The experience was truly beautiful! Thank-you Panagioti for making it happen! The healing aspects of working in nature excite me. I will be posting Damien’s photos!

The situation in Greece has intensified for our participants. It is both daunting and critical to continue our work there. Last year, we were challenged by the loss of the Kypseli Agora. That challenge led us to a different work approach- we rehearsed across from the Acropolis and in various local sites as well as creating a stage piece shown in two locations.
This year, Panagiotis Andronikidis, director of ELANADISTIKANOUME, our co-facilitator is coordinating an effort to extend our outreach. Participants from previous years that continue creating with ELANADISTIKANOUME will be assisting this year’s production by leading some of the exercises in rehearsals with the new participants!
